Here’s a book I read as a kid, and I’m glad that Farrah seems to be enjoying it so. “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry” is a vivid Newberry Award winning story about an African American family (last name Logan!) fighting to stay together and strong in the face of brutal racist attacks, illness, poverty, and betrayal in the Deep South of the 1930s. The setting is Mississippi at the height of the Depression. The events that take place throughout the book are an eye-opener for the main character, and I hope it will be for Farrah as well. It’ll be a great backbone as we eventually delve into lessons about the Great Depression in our heritage studies.
My goal for this year is for the girls to get into more historical fiction novels, and this one is certainly a treasure. By the way, our nighttime read-aloud right now is “All-of-a-Kind Family” by Sidney Taylor. Set in New York, it’s a delightful tale of a poor immigrant family of 5 sisters. We love books that feature all-girl siblings!
