I “taught” the girls how to make fried plantains. Easy peasy – plantains dropped in hot vegetable oil, right? Not quite. I’m not sure what went wrong, but it was a good demonstration of what happens when you don’t research a project first. Things aren’t always what they seem, and our plantains were thick and gooey when they should’ve been thin and crispy. Oh well! At least they had practice cutting with a sharp knife and laying the pieces in hot grease. (That does take a certain amount of skill, you know.) In the end, I dropped by Tommy Bahama restaurant and picked up a to-go order of fried plantains so the girls could see how they were supposed to turn out. They were yummy!
